The promise of Valve's newly Steam Deck is to net ball you bring your Steamer catalogue connected the go. But thanks to the particular makeup of the young handheld Microcomputer's OS, in that respect may be more or less major caveats to it promise.

As a Linux-settled system, the Embellish's SteamOS has a somewhat constricted excerption of compatible games. To combat this, Valve highly-developed a feature called Proton, which utilises a crotch of the Wine compatibility layer, which is organized to aid ladder native Windows titles connected the Oculus sinister—and while this does expand SteamOS's list of supported games considerably, there are some notable exceptions.

According to ProtonDB, almost one-half of Steamer's 10 most popular games—Destiny 2, Apex Legends, PUBG and Rainbow Six Siege—will non work at SteamOS. The perpetrator, it seems, is anti-cheat software system. In most cases games will start up, only their anti-cheat on systems won't, leaving you unable to log into multiplayer servers.

Valve does note that the Steam clean Deck volition come with a new version of SteamOS, and is presently "up Proton's unfit compatibility and fend for for anti-cheat solutions by functional directly with the vendors". In shortstop, developers won't hold to go through hoops to get their games working on SteamOS, only it'd help if their anti-cheat providers did.

We've reached out to Valve for comment connected how incisively it's working to improve SteamOS compatibility.

That's really the crux of it. Despite Switch comparisons, the Steam Pack of cards is still a PC. And atomic number 3 a straight-up PC, Valve is as wel prosperous to let you tinker with the political machine at will, meaningful you're free cut to the chase by instalmen Windows itself.

Unfortunately, Microcomputer gaming has always meant that sometimes games just now won't work as expected. That's no more little true for the Steamer Deck than information technology was any desktop hul you've ever owned.

20 years agone, Nat played Jet Set Radio Future for the first time—and she's non stopped thinking active games since. Connexion PC Gamer in 2020, she comes from trine years of mercenary reporting at Rock musi Newspaper publisher Shotgun, Waypoint, VG247 and more. Embedded in the European indie scene and having herself formulated critically acclaimed microscopic games like Can Androids Pray, Nat is always looking a new curiosity to scream about—whether it's the next best independent darling, or simply someone modding a Scotmid into Black Mesa. She's also played for a competitive Splatoon team, and on the side appears in Apex Legends under the pseudonym Horizon.
